Bastile Soap: The “Bastardized” Castile Bar That’s Winning Hearts
The Gentle Rebel of the Soap World
When people talk about natural soap, they often mention Castile soap — a beautiful, centuries-old soap made with 100% olive oil. It’s simple, nourishing, and famously gentle. But there’s another soap cousin that’s just as kind to skin… with a bit more personality.
Let us introduce you to Bastile soap — a playful twist on tradition, and a quiet little rebel in the soap world.
What Is Bastile Soap?
Bastile soap is a delightful twist on the classic Castile soap from Spain. While Castile soap is traditionally made with 100% olive oil, Bastile soap is a “bastardized” version. Bastile is short for bastardized Castile — yes, really. It’s a cheeky nickname that soap makers gave to soaps made with at least 70% olive oil, but with other oils or butters added to the mix. We like to think of it as Castile soap’s edgier sibling — still soft-spoken and skin-loving, but with just enough kick to lather up better and rinse off cleaner. This Castile-inspired soap has carved its own niche as a natural, gentle, and moisturizing cleanser that’s far from ordinary.
Why Bastile Soap Deserves a Spot in Your Shower
- A Unique Blend of Oils: Unlike pure Castile soap, Bastile uses a mix of oils, balancing creaminess, lather, and gentle cleansing.
- Naturally Nourishing: With olive oil as a main ingredient, it’s moisturizing and soothing — great for sensitive or dry skin.
- Simple & Clean Ingredients: No artificial fragrances or harsh chemicals, just honest soap-making.
- Versatile & Timeless: Perfect for face, body, hands, a true multitasker.
How Is Bastile Soap Made?
Following traditional soap-making methods, Bastile soap blends oils carefully to achieve a firm bar with rich lather. Its higher olive oil content keeps it mild and skin-friendly, while other oils add a bit of bounce and longevity. After saponification, the soap cures for a minimum 10-12 months to reach its perfect texture.
Benefits That Keep People Coming Back
- Moisturizes without stripping
- Calms irritated or sensitive skin
- Eco-friendly and biodegradable
- Hypoallergenic and gentle enough for daily use
Why we love it:
Super Gentle - Thanks to its high olive oil content, Bastile soap is incredibly moisturizing and calming — great for sensitive skin, babies, or anyone who wants to avoid harsh cleansers.
Balanced with Butters - Our Bastile soaps often include skin-loving extras like shea butter, kokum butter, or tallow to add creaminess and richness to every bar.
Better Lather - Unlike traditional Castile soaps, Bastile soaps offer a better texture and a smoother bubble without sacrificing gentleness.
What makes our Bastile soaps special?
At Lilith in Bloom, we use only natural clays, essential oils, and botanicals — never fragrance oils or artificial colorants. Some of our Bastile bars are unscented, like Bare Bloom, while others (like Moss and Stone) swirl in green clays, charcoal, or vetiver for a deeper sensory experience.
We make our Bastile soaps slowly, cure them for 6+ weeks, and cut each one by hand. They’re as close to a skin-hug as soap can get.
